Commissioner adds support for Welsh Women’s Aid Campaign

Last Updated: 02/04/2020

Isolation may make matters worse for those living with domestic violence and abuse. They could experience serious harm. So the Police & Crime Commissioner for South Wales, Rt Hon Alun Michael, is throwing his support behind the Welsh Women’s Aid campaign to promote the Welsh Government Live Fear Free Domestic Abuse Helpline through the Covid19 crisis.

Live Fear Free is available 24 hours a day 7 days a week and can provide help and advice to:

  • anyone experiencing domestic abuse
  • anyone who knows someone who needs help, for example, a friend, family member or colleague
  • practitioners seeking professional advice

All conversations with Live Fear Free are confidential and are taken by highly experienced and fully trained staff.

Speaking about the service, South Wales Police & Crime Commissioner, Alun Michael said:

“The impact of having to stay at home can make matters much worse for those living with domestic violence and abuse. They might experience serious harm. Changes in lifestyle can contribute to increased control, to violence and to other forms of abuse.  The current situation may make it even more difficult for a survivor to leave the perpetrator.

“So it's more important than ever for survivors to know beyond doubt that help is available.

“If you or someone you know is experiencing violence or abuse, the Live Fear Free helpline is confidential, it's free and it's available 24/7 to provide advice and support.

“Violence and abuse are never acceptable and South Wales Police will respond even during the present emergency. If it's an emergency call 999, or for silent help dial 999, and then press 55.

“Thank you very much for the help that you're giving to anybody who is experiencing violence and abuse.”
